Dude, Is Your Boat Sinking?

Power to change.png

Summary of Main Idea

A while back, my family was in Baltimore on vacation.

At one point, we were on a boat in the Baltimore harbor, when we came up on a couple of huge yachts. One of them shouted out to us, “Dude, is your boat sinking?”

Sure enough, we were taking on water.

This began a six hour process of Coast Guard, mayday calls, and the police. When the police got there, they immediately took charge of the situation, if i’m being honest, almost to the point where I thought they were kind of being jerks about it all.

A few hours in, I realized they weren't being jerks at all. They were taking control because if they didn’t control the situation, the situation would control them. If they didn’t get a handle on the situation and control the crowd of people trying to take selfies with the family in the sinking boat, the crowd would control them.

The same thing is true for us.

If we don’t take control of our lives, they will take control of us. If we don’t take control of our emotions, they will spiral out of control. If we don’t take control of our budget, our spending with take control of us. If we don’t take control of our actions, our actions will take over and point us in the wrong direction.

If you were completely honest with yourself right now, you could probably think of one area of your life that you need to take control of.

So how do you do that?

The good news is, you have the power to change, because you have the power of choice. Even if you’re in a terrible situation, you have the power to choose how you view and respond to the place where you are.

So what’s the next step for you?

Finish this statement: “If I took control of ___________, I would ____________.”

Now, reverse engineer success. Work backwards, and write out 5-10 steps to get you to the present, and then take that first step.

You’ve got to control your situation, or your situation will end up controlling you.
